The powerful new Berkey Earth DE (Diatomaceous Earth) water filter was designed and built with the price conscious customer in mind. With a low and affordable starting price, its performance far outshines all other competing gravity fed water filters available today. The Berkey Earth water filters are the most powerful gravity fed water filters in the filtration class, like the Black Berkey water filters which are the most powerful gravity fed water filters in the purification class. The Berkey Earth DE water filter has a lifespan of 3 years or 11,350 liters whichever comes first and is available in 18cm and 23cm sizes.
The only significant difference between the 18cm Berkey Earth water filter and the 23cm size is flow rate. For instance in a Big Berkey installed with 4 18cm Berkey Earth water filters the flow rate is 72 liters of water in 24 hours, with the 23cm Berkey Earth water filters the flow rate is 136 liters in 24 hours*.

Berkey Earth water filters far out-perform other competing brands, especially in the ceramic filter category. The proprietary formulation of the Berkey Earth DE water filters gives the filter the special reduction capabilities of natural Diatomaceous Earth and other components, making it more powerful than any other gravity fed water filter of its kind available on the market today. DE’s natural characteristics make it the ideal media to filter out contaminants utilizing the same methodology as the earth does to purify water.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a fossil substance, made up of very small silicon shells left by a type of microscopic, hard-shelled, one-celled algae (trillions of them) called diatoms. It is reported that there are over 1500 uses for DE today, including filtering agents for water and milk, toothpaste abrasive, thermal insulators, mechanical insecticides, liquid absorbents and more.
The Berkey Earth water filter tested up to Log 3 removal, that's 99.9%, for the following potential chemical contaminants: volatile organic contaminants (VOCs), semi-volatile organic contaminants, Heavy metals (at both low and high PH levels), pesticides, chlorides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals and petroleum based products. The Berkey Earth water filter has also been successfully tested for reduction of the following biological contaminants: bacillus atrophaeus virus, coliform bacteria & fecal coliform bacteria, e-coli bacteria and the salmonella bacteria. Further bacteriological testing is being actively pursued at this time.
Berkey Earth water filters last up to three years per filter before requiring replacement whereas competing brands must be replaced every six months to one year, depending on brand. This makes Berkey Earth water filters virtually the most economical water filtration elements available and the ideal replacement filter as they fit any other brand of standard sized gravity fed filter system. The Berkey Earth water filters can be used as a less expensive yet more powerful replacement element for most other brands of gravity fed water filter systems from 5.7 liters and larger.
Under normal circumstances the Berkey Earth water filter will be exhausted after three years. The filters need be cleaned only when the flow rate slows down to the point where it becomes inconvenient. When using municipal water this typically occurs after 6-18 months of use. When using extremely turbid water this can occur in as little as two weeks. As the filters remove particulate from the water, the flow rate will gradually reduce. The flow rate of the Berkey Earth water filter can be easily renewed by simply brushing the outer surface with a soft toothbrush or soft Scotch-Brite pad under running water. As the top layer of the Berkey Earth water filter and the contaminates are brushed off and flushed away , a new layer becomes available. This process can be repeated over and over before the Berkey Earth water filter material has been exhausted.
The Berkey Earth filters have a lifespan of 11,350 litres or 3 years per filter whichever comes first. For instance a Budget Big Berkey installed with 2 Berkey Earth water filters will last 22,700 litres or 6 years whichever comes first. The reason the lifespan increases as the number of filters increases is that the amount of water to be filtered is distributed over more filters. All Berkey Earth water filters come with a 2 year warranty, the same as the Black Berkey water filters.
*Flow rates are calculated with upper chamber full to top. The flow rate decreases as the water level declines. As it is impractical to keep the upper chamber completely full at all times, the flow rates are in practice less than the stated optimal rate.
